 In Aceh, several army operations left twelve rebels dead. The police also reported that the rebels had kidnapped 50 people in the past four months and 20 had not yet been released. The police and rebels both terrorize civilians in order to encourage support.

The government continues arresting and prosecuting Islamic radicals. Fear of arousing more Islamic fundamentalist violence is less of a problem as it becomes obvious that violence between Moslems and Christians is the greater issue. Moreover, Islamic fundamentalists trying to impose a strict lifestyle (no drinking, no dancing, no night clubs, no a lot of other stuff) are creating a lot of popular hostility to the fundamentalists.
